Boston at Dusk Photo Store

I was talking to my friend Joshua about his ringtone company, Jivjiv.

While we were talking, I told him that when I posted my photos on Jivjiv I might be able to get more photography customers.

So that lead me to open up a CafePress Store for a new photo I shot of Boston at Dusk.

Here's how the postcard page looks:

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to sell photos online, and both Jivjiv and CafePress don't cost anyting to try it out, so we'll see how it goes.

The Steve Garfield Show - Podcast #3

In this show I talk about Adam Curry's Daily Source Code and today's blog posts: HBO's Deadwood, Blogger Comments and Radio David Byrne.

I'm still learning the best way to produce a podcast. For this show I used a wired hand held mic hooked up to my GL/2 which is connected to my PowerBook over Firewire.

I recorded the audio in FCP using the voice over tool, imported the audio into Soundtrack, edited the beginning silence out, exported that to an .aif file which I opened up in iTunes, then edited the ID3 tag information and converted the file to an mp3, which I then uploaded to audioblog.com.

Enjoy!

I'm glad he shared that.

Watching his video was better than watching a TV ad for the show.

Coming from a trusted source like him, I'm now going to have to figure out how to catch up on 16 episodes of Deadwood.

I hope HBO is re-running them, since HBO ON DEMAND is a joke. If it was truly ON DEMAND, I could watch episodes 1-16 whenever I wanted to.

Deadwood 1-11 are no longer available on ON DEMAND and Deadwood 12 stops showing April 4th.

Put my photo on your cell phone

I just opened up Steve Garfield's Store on Jivjiv.

This online store allows me to sell my photos, for cell phones.

I've been beta-testing Jivjiv for a while now for my friend Joshua and now it's live!

If you are interested, you can set up your own store too:
Jivjiv Stores allow anyone with original music or graphics to publish their own material and sell it directly in the ringtone marketplace - perhaps the fastest growing market in the US.
How to open a Jivjiv store in under five minutes!

I wonder if selling photos on cell phones will be more profiable than selling my Sad Clown paint by numbers oil painting on a T-Shirt, over at CafePress?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

This video is so good.

As I was watching it I told Carol that "videoblogs are better than TV."

Really.

It was so fun to see everybody that I watch on a regular basis, and I got a kick out of seeing myself in there twice.

Richard really did a nice job of picking some of the best moments in videoblogging, especially Amanda Congdon running the camera, and some special Ryan and Jay moments!

Blogs, Everyone?

Blogs, Everyone? Weblogs Are Here to Stay, but Where Are They Headed? - Knowledge@Wharton
While most agree that blogging will continue to be popular, its next steps are uncertain. Demopoulos suggests that blogging overexposure is on the horizon. 'Right now, blogging is trendy,' he says. 'I see that lasting a few years, but it will slow down.' Hunter contends that blogging is here to stay, as many sites start to incorporate blogging features, and some news sites become more blog-like. The blogosphere will also become known for topics other than technology and politics. Two things are certain: Blogging will remain disruptive to the traditional media, and new uses will surface. 'You are going to see blogging move to video and instant messaging,' says Werbach. 'It's just the beginning.'

That's Not Right: Comcast Remote Control

My mother-in-law, who is 89 years old, just got the new Comcast remote controls for her new cable boxes.

As Kieran Chapman says, "the remote control is the worst I've ever used."

You think it's tough for you? Try showing an 89 year old how to turn the TV on and off by pressing the small little button that says "all on", that's positioned right next to a button that's three times as big and says ON DEMAND.

That button has 'ON' on it too.

Please!!!

Comcast needs to make a new control for old people that has an ON/OFF button on it, channel up/down, volume control and a number pad. That's it!

Old people don't need the other 365 buttons that you've randomly placed on the remote control.

Tires: Buy online or local?

They've got some good deals on the internets, but local service is worth the extra cost.

After bringing my car in for service today and mentioning that one tire seemed to be loosing air, I found out that it had a nail in it, in a place that could not be repaired. Also, two other tires are very low on tread and have a couple of unsightly buldges.

So it's time for new tires.

I checked out my options both on line and locally.

Here's what I found:

ONLINE

The Dunlop SP Sport A2 Plus costs $53 online at The Tire Rack.

You've got to add $32.10 for shipping and then it's going to cost $130 to install, for a total of $374.10.

LOCAL
Compare that to dropping off the car at the Goodyear Auto Service Center on Boylston Street tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM, for a total cost of $400.

That's a difference of $25.90.

Descision made. New tires all around and drinks for everyone!

That's Not Right: TurboTax Refunds

How can you have a form that displays the image of a check, highlights the checking account # for you to copy, and then gives you the option of choosing a savings account?

That's Not Right: TurboTax for the Web

I'm doing my mother-in-law's taxes with TurboTax for the Web and have a problem.

I've got an error in there that I can't fix.

I get the error:
Massachusetts Schedule CB: Homeowner Checkbox and the Renter Checkbox cannot both be checked.

The screen says, "You must fix this error."

The problem is, that they give me no way to get into the form to fix it.

I've tried three different browsers. No luck.

I sent TurboTax support an email, and got back a speedy reply:
Dear Steve,

Based on the information you provided we have determined that your issue is best resolved over the phone. You will receive a call back at the phone number you provided within 24 hours. Our hours of operation are 5am-9pm Pacific Standard Time seven days a week.

Thank you for contacting TurboTax technical support.

TurboTax Support
Stay tuned.

Update 3:20 PM
The good news is that a support rep from Intuit called be back right away. The bad news is that they could not solve my problem.

Here's their follow up email:
Dear Steve,

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you with resolving your issue. We review your return on the web and were unable to remove the checkmark. We discussed removing the state and redoing the interview as a possible fix. I apologize for not being able to resolve your issue. If you need any additional assistance, feel free to contact us again.

Thank you for contacting TurboTax technical support.

Respectfully,

You'd think that someone in tech support could remove a checkmark from a database, but phone support at Intuit couldn't take it that far.

Oh well. I guess I'll just print out the form, grab some white-out, and remove the offending checkmark.

That's one less electronic tax return that'll be filed this year.

Ourmedia Explained

JD Lasica explains how Ourmedia is different than just belonging to the Internet Archive?
Let us count the ways:

1) The Internet Archive remains geared toward scholars and historians. Ourmedia is geared toward anyone who has ever picked up a camcorder, tape recorder or camera.

2) The Internet Archive's UI isn't very friendly. We're out to create a very user-friendly experience for people.

3) The Internet Archive only allows public domain and Creative Commons-licensed works. Ourmedia allows those as well as fully copyrighted works.

4) The Internet Archive is about storage and preservation. Ourmedia is about storage, preservation, community, and learning. We're in the process of creating tutorials, best practices and learning centers.

5) The Archive is a fairly static experience. Ourmedia has completely new content on the front page every week, free member blogs, and new ways to slice and dice content: we hope to soon have a search engine that lets you seek out content that you can legally remix and recirculate.

Understand that all media on Ourmedia is stored on the Internet Archive's servers, and everything else is on Bryght's servers.
Ourmedia is a place for your media.

My friend Joshua is paying me 5 cents to link to Natural.com - The Blog for All Things Natural.

The Steve Garfield Show

Podcast Title: The Steve Garfield Show
Podcast RSS Feed URL: http://stevegarfield.audioblog.com/rss/podcast.xml

I've been so busy with the videoblog revolution that I haven't really made the time to create a podcast, until today.

Now, with audioblog.com, I've been able to easily create a podcast. It's exciting!

The interesting thing about it though, is that it doesn't have an associated blog.

All I did was open up an account on audioblog.com and create an audio post.

I recorded the audio from the speaker on my PowerBook directly into a web page at audioblog.com

Then I created an XML feed and popped the audio post into the feed.

Voila, a podcast.

It was easy.

You can subscribe to my podcast feed with this Podcast RSS Feed URL: http://stevegarfield.audioblog.com/rss/podcast.xml

You can also listen to my first podcast here:

Hello Warner Brothers Records, please sponsor my podcast.

Tricks of the Trade

Liza Ramudo-Hariton's Cashier Trick of the Trade:
"When giving a customer their change, first place the coins in their hand, then the bills and receipt over them. This way, the coins will not slide off the bills, fall on the floor, annoy the customer, and hold up your line while the customer picks up the coins."
Nice!

Consumers are not couch potatoes

Avid will buy Calif. rival in $460m deal:
‘‘At the end of the day, consumers aren’t that interested in creating their own content,’’ said Michael Gartenberg, vice president of Jupiter Research in New York. ‘‘They’re far more interested in consuming other peoples’ content. That’s why they call them consumers.’’
Dear Michael,
Take a look at cameras, instant cameras, digital cameras and cameraphones. Look how many people are posting their pictures to flickr.

Technorati reports that "between 30,000 and 40,000 new blogs are being created every single day - more than double the number (15,000 per day) from October."

Audio podcasts are exploding in popularity with 4232 weblogs actively tracked at ipodder.org.

With new tools making it easier for people to create and share video, video blogging watch for the popularity of videoblogging to explode.

I'll admit to being somewhat of a couch potato media consumer, but a selective one. TiVo helps make my TV watching smarter. I track 164 blog feeds with bloglines. Most of these feeds contain content created by consumers.

These days I'm watching more and more consumer created video using my video aggregator, ANT.

Michael, you might not be able to see the desire for people to create their own media right now because desire is not a tangible thing.

You're probably looking for examples of consumer created content, but don't see it.

I can tell you where it is. It's in old shoeboxes and dresser drawers. It's on old Kodachrome slides and VHS tapes.

Lots of people create media but don't have an easy way to share it. That's what's coming. Look at what's happening at Our Media.

JD Lasica says, "Months from now, Ourmedia.org will evolve from a destination website to an open registry -- a network of likeminded grassroots sites that freely share personal media with a global audience."

So that's where we're heading.

He explained that gloves were available in the area for staff to use, and I informed him that NONE of the staff were using gloves.

I asked if gloves were required for serving bread and he then explained that there was hand sanitizer, that staff members used, and that there were sinks available for staff to wash their hands.

I've written to the Inspectional Services Division to determine if he was telling the truth or not.

I also explained that ourmedia.com was going to go live this week and would provide a place where they could put their video for free.

Then they could link to it from their blogger blogs.

I showed them how to create a link and where the help page on blogger is.

So when they finish their projects, they'll be able to upload the video to ourmedia.com and link to it from their blogger blogs.

I also told them about http://videoblogging.info where there is a lot of helpful info for videoblogging and a link to the Yahoo! video blogging group.

Question of the day from lindsayism.com:
"You know that upcoming remake of Bewitched starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell? Well, obviously it's way too late for this, but wouldn't it have been totally brilliant if, halfway through the movie, another actor began playing Darren and they never said a thing about it and Will Ferrell was never seen again? And if they asked reviewers not to mention that twist so that audiences would be surprised?"

Bloggers on Nightline

Blog for America has a post about last night's Nightline story on bloggers.

It was fun to see that they had a shot of me filming them, filming us.

They had a nice shot of my video blog showing my video of the Berkman Center meeting playing.

ATTRIBUTION
I've got a Creative Commons license on my blog which states that people can use my content for free, for non-commercial purposes, but must give me attribution. I'm wondering where the attribution was in the Nightline piece? Does a screen shot of my blog count? Here's how I would have edited that segment.

I'd link to the video that they have online, but Nightline doesn't support permalinks for their video. And BTW, I can't get the video to play on my Mac.

IDENTIFYING SPEAKERS
I was just watching the Nightline Bloggers story on TiVo and noticed that they didn't put up a graphic with the name of person who was speaking, or even introduce the person by name.

In the case of Lisa Williams, she was introduced like this:

"one member of the group, a mother, who blogs about being a mother"

Couldn't they they have said:

"Lisa Williams, a mother, who blogs about being a mother"

They could have easily found out her name since they had my video where I displayed her name when she was talking.

What are the 'journalistic rules' for crediting people in stories?

ARE COMMENTERS BLOGGERS?
At the end of the show they displayed, what they said were comments of bloggers, that they had gathered real time during the show.

If Nightline was a blog, they would have given credit to each blogger's comment with a link back to their blog.

Blog For America notes that:
Nightline's "Closing Thoughts" featured several Blog for America commenters talking about the broadcast, like Andrew C. White, who said:
Yes, if journalists were doing their job and not being corrupted they wouldn't have to worry about bloggers doing their jobs for them.

Wake up Journalists! Take back your honor and profession!
So in that case what Nightline was really showing on their screen was a comment from a blog reader who was not necessarily a blogger. He's a member of the blogosphere yes, but not necessarily a blogger.

Someone should transcribe each of the comments that were diplayed on screen and find out where they came from.

I think Nightline has a lot more to learn from Bloggers
:

1. Provide permalinks to video.
2. Provide a link back to bloggers mentioned in your reports, or at least credit them.
3. Start a blog of your own to document who was featured in your segments.
4. If you start a blog, add an RSS 2.0 feed with enclosures so people can subscribe.

The News is Now Public

Chuck Olsen writes about NowPublic.com:
NowPublic.com shows how we can work together with the MSM to create the news. When the MSM publishes a story, that's only the beginning - not the end. What if you'd like a photo/audio/video clip of a news event? NowPublic acts as a distributed assignment desk. You can see if someone is providing or requesting media related to a story in your area or by topic. If you're so inclined, snap a photo or some video and upload it. Now people wanting to see or hear the local angle to a story have it at their fingertips. Plus, you control the rights to your media. Share with the bloggers, but make money if the MSM or an ad agency wants the hi-res version of your work.

Boston Globe reporters can't have a political life

Christine Chinlund, Boston Globe Ombudsman, writes today to explain why reporters are expected to be robots without any political thoughts of their own. Check out what they've done to tech writer Hiawatha Bray.

Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / Blog report:
Last November the Globe learned that technology reporter Hiawatha Bray was posting his political views on a web log. The editors warned him not to continue. Even with no explicit Globe rules at that point governing what's OK in the largely uncharted, semi-public/semi-private world of blogging, Bray's anti-Kerry and pro-Bush rhetoric was at odds with the impartiality expected of journalists. Bray agreed to stop.

End of story -- until last week, when a liberal online media watchdog group reported what Bray had written. That brought dozens of angry e-mails to this office; some said fire Bray.

Responds Baron: ''Mr. Bray is a technology reporter and did not cover the presidential campaign, other than a minor technology-related story on very rare occasions. That said, his blog postings were inappropriate and in violation of our standards.' Thus, the November warning.

Said Bray: ''I don't cover politics for the Globe and figured that gave me a fair amount of leeway. I'm a lowly tech writer; who'd care what I thought about the election? Turns out, a lot of people did.'

''I make no apology . . . for my opinions. But I do apologize for expressing them in a venue that might lead some to suppose that my employers share them.'"
Notice how the Globe doesn't want to link to the 'liberal online media watchdog group', so I had to do it for you.

Monitortan: The mental meanderings of Hiawatha Bray, technology reporter for the Boston Globe.

David Weinberger writes, It's about transparency, not impartiality:
Just how stupid does the Globe think its readers are? Do we really believe that tech writers and sports writers and style writers don't have political views? Do we think that out of the office they go slack-jawed when asked who they're voting for? No, we understand that because they're professional journalists, they do a reasonable job of keeping their personal political views out of their writing.

Transparency works better than reprimands. I'd rather know a reporter's views so I can understand where the journalist is coming from and can compensate for those views if they affect the journalist's writing.

Jeff Jarvis imagines the future of news

The future of news:
So imagine that a local news organization -- one of the incumbents or a new competitor -- becomes an aggregator of: News -- Staff still reports, writes, and edits what they do best. But we also link to, syndicate, promote, and support the work of citizen journalists. To the public, we provide a means to get all the news we can find (a new slogan in the About.com era). We are the starting point (for some), the organizer (for some). But we no longer pretend to do it all. It's distributed news. We even help citizen journalists to join together to report stories: The one tangible suggestion out of this confab came from Jay Rosen, who said that one reporter somewhere will show how open-source journalism will work, bringing together the effort and expertise of the crowd. We can provide support to these "information entrepreneurs," as one of the group called them: advertising revenue (see below), tools, training (the BBC is starting a journalism school for the people; shouldn't and couldn't any local newspaper be that?). And they need not only write stories. Their reporting could be videotaping the board of ed meetings; it could be getting a senior citizens' club to report on prices in every grocery store; it could be pulling together Little League scores.

Hi Steve and Carol

We went out to dinner tonight at the Birch Street Bistro in Roslindale.

When we stepped up to the bar, Trish and Sean Hurley of Hurley’s Boston Soda Breads said, "Hi Steve and Carol."

They're two more fans, who were featured in The Carol and Steve Show Episode 5 - Wine Expo.

That's the second time today that people have recognized us from The Carol and Steve Show.

We had a nice dinner at the bar. I had pesto chicken with a Hofbrauhaus Munchen Original beer. Very tasty!

Now this from Channel 102

Do you know about Channel 101?
Channel 101 is a chance to sit in the worn-out chair of the fat network exec, drunk on the blood of lowly artists whose right to exist is given in exchange for their ability to nourish. If there are 10 shows in the screening and 7 of them are good, that means 2 good shows aren't coming back and the power of life and death is in your hands. Base your decision on whatever you want. You run the network. You pick the programming. Then come back in a month and see the next episodes of the shows you picked- plus a healthy crop of new pilots. Dump the whole lineup and start fresh, or keep your favorite show running all year. Unlike "real" television, at Channel 101, what you want is what you get more of, and the day you stop wanting something is the day it stops.
Well now there's a Channel 102 out of NYC and one of this month's shows is Jesus Christ Super Cop.

Laugh out loud funny.

Are you Steve?

Kristie Helms just walked up to me in Doyle's Cafe and asked, "Are you Steve?"

She recognized me from The Carol and Steve Show!

Cool!

She said her favorite episode was The Carol and Steve Show: Episode 6 - Shopping. Everytime she goes shopping in Roche Bros. she thinks of that episode and the fact that Red peppers are quite a good source of beta-carotene.

Yay!

She enjoyed meeting Carol too. ;-)

John Tobin: New Video

I just posted a new video of Boston City Councillor John Tobin over on his blog.

This time it's footage of him at a recent Boston City Council Meeting, requesting a hearing to discuss the merits of cord blood donation.

It was my first time at a City Council meeting and I found it very interesting.

Posting a video like this, to his web site, will give viewers an inside look into how city business is conducted.

Roger McNamee's The New Normal

Video on the internet: Part 1,
While it will certainly be interesting to see which owners put their content up for internet consumption, I’m far more curious about the business models they will choose. What will the role be of subscriptions? Pay-per-view? Advertising? What new models will emerge? How long will it take for the marketplace to accept video content created specifically for the internet?
Part 2.
Any content that delivers a good value in entertainment is likely to succeed, no matter who produces it. As much as I would like to have re-runs of Dinosaurs and Perry Mason delivered to my TV over the internet, I’m perfectly happy for now with fake commercials and videos of Steve Ballmer dancing around the stage at the Microsoft sales conference. That stuff is very entertaining . . . and it’s free.

The democratization of media

The Odeo Blog: On money and podcasting:
My focus for almost six years has been on enabling people to publish to the web—and very seldomly has money been involved. The democratization of media is something I take very seriously. I think it's one of the most powerful forces in society today. And it's what inspired me to help develop and spend my time on Odeo. Noah and others who I'm working with feel the same way.
Evan Williams' "focus is on humanizing a very promising technology."

Public Access for the Internet?

morph: Looking to technology to salvage public education:
During The Media Center's Whose News? Media, Technology and the Common Good seminar, Co-Chair of Digital Promise and former NBC News president Larry Grossman talks about the Digital Opportunity Information Trust act (DOIT), a bill that is designed to provide funding for research and development for digitizitations to enable the public to benefit from advanced technologies.
Sounds like an interesting group. If I knew about it earlier, I would have asked for a media pass.

Based on Halley's report, it's probably better that I wasn't there.

I just found Scott Andrew via my new Eric Rice PubSub subscription.

The way it worked was that PubSub found a link to The Eric Rice Show on Scott Andrew's blog, so when I followed the link to Scott's blog I saw that he was listing and linking to everyone that had used his music in podcasts.

Scott says, "Wow, I feel like it's 1998, I've just discovered the web and I'm linking to all my new friends! :)"

With all the excitement around podcasting and videoblogging, the internet IS fun!

You might like Scott's music, he calls it lo-fi acoustic pop, and it's podsafe too!

Industrial Musicals Offer Odes to Tractors, Toilets:
By day, Steve Young toils as a comedy writer for David Letterman. By night, he's an archeologist, historian and sociologist of sorts. Or maybe he's just a demented, obsessed collector.

Young has the definitive collection of industrial musical recordings. They are the vinyl souvenirs produced by companies who staged musicals about the glories of road graders and air conditioners, flush toilets and plain old electric light bulbs.
